Monoamine Transporter Mechanism Studio

Explore how a compound interacts with a transporter binding pocket, which conformational changes it may stabilize, and what that means for neurotransmitter uptake and downstream biological function. Compare evidence across DAT, NET and SERT.

Transporters versus receptors

DAT, NET (also called NAT) and SERT are sodium/chloride-coupled transporters, not classical neurotransmitter receptors. Ligand binding can alter transporter-mediated uptake and indirectly influence receptor signaling. Molecular affinity alone does not establish behavioural effects.

Dopamine transporter

SLC6A3 · endogenous substrate: dopamine

Dopamine clearance; shapes the duration and spatial distribution of dopaminergic signaling.

Binding-site structure

Human DAT inhibitor-bound structure; central S1 and allosteric regions, extracellular gate and ion coordination.

Function elicited

Transport inhibition may increase extracellular dopamine, but downstream signaling and behaviour depend on circuit context.
